ALABANIA

Albania Quick Overview

Albania has fertile agricultural land and a growing tourism sector, yet poverty remains a major challenge. Despite economic growth and a reduction of the poverty rate to 17%, the country is still one of the poorest in Europe. Older people, children, and residents of remote rural areas often have only limited access to social and medical services. At the same time, many young Albanians leave the country for economic reasons – in 2024 alone, over 28,000 people emigrated. This weakens social structures in the regions and highlights the urgent need for targeted support for the most vulnerable groups.

Ongoing Work in Albania

Ongoing work in Albania

The Hilfsverein Nymphenburg Foundation works closely in Albania with religious sisters and the Red Cross to support people whose daily lives are shaped by poverty, illness, and loneliness. In Shkodre, Delvinë, and Vlorë, project partners provide care, dignity, and practical assistance to those often forgotten by society. They visit the sick and the dying in their homes, offer palliative care, supply families with food and medication, and create spaces for connection and community. Whether through home-based care services in northern Albania, support for families in need, or a warm meal for elderly and homeless people, personal contact remains at the heart of every effort. A listening ear, human closeness, and practical help give renewed hope and show people that they are not alone.

Palliative Care in Shkodre

For more than 20 years, the sisters of the Spiritual Path Community have lived and worked in their small convent on the outskirts of Shkodër in northern Albania.

Support for Families in Delvinë, Albania

The economic situation in Delvinë, Southern Albania, remains extremely challenging. Unemployment is high, and many families have little opportunity for a steady income.

Soup Kitchen in Vlorë

In Vlorë, many elderly and homeless people live under difficult conditions. State pensions are often very low, and the costs of medications, doctor visits, or daily necessities frequently exceed their means.
